KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island's Steve Moyers has signed as a free agent with the Seattle Mariners, becoming the second member of Rhody's 2016 senior class to go on to a professional career. Following his mandatory physical with the Mariners, the lefty pitcher will be assigned to one of the club's minor league affiliates.
A four-year weekend starter for the Rams, Moyers is Rhode Island's all-time leader in innings pitched (314.0) and career starts (49). His 252 career strikeouts rank second in program history while his 3.07 career ERA is good for eighth all-time.
The East Longmeadow, Mass. native turned in 23 quality starts over the course of his career, including eight starts with zero earned runs allowed. This past season, he collected six wins while recording 78 strikeouts over 96.2 innings pitched.
A member of the 2015 Atlantic 10 All-Championship team, Moyers was twice recognized as one of the A-10's best starting pitchers and was recognized by D1Baseball.com as one of the conference's top MLB Draft prospects in 2016.
He is the second Rhode Island pitcher to sign with the Mariners in recent years as Tim Boyce was drafted by Seattle in 2010.
